Dealing With The Blue Shells In Life
Growing up one of the video games I spent hours playing was Mario Kart (N64, of course). I loved it. Partly because I was pretty (very) good at it.
You know what I didn’t love?
The Blue Shell.
For anyone who doesn’t know the blue shell was the most feared weapon in the whole game. It was basically a homing device that targeted the player who was in first place. I cannot even begin to explain the sheer frustration and just pure, unadulterated rage when you were inches from the finish line, about to win and all of sudden out of nowhere, you were blown to smithereens by a blue shell. The worst part wasn’t even being hit, no, the worst part was that once it did hit you, the explosion was so big you would be knocked so far off the map that you had no chance of making a comeback.
And believe me, for someone who hates losing more than a fat kid hates veggies this was Monkey balls.
But you see, while that was just a video game, life also comes with ‘blue shells’.
The blue shells in life are the out of nowhere. Those “are you fucking kidding me?!” incidents or events will happen to us when we are ‘inches from the finish line’ of our goal.
There the curve balls the universe throws at us to test our mettle. However, having spent a good chunk of my childhood playing Mario Kart, I’ve learned a few things about dealing with blue shells.
1. Use Power ups
In Mario Kart you could pick up powerups as you raced around the track that gave you different abilities to help you win the race. One of these powerups was the ‘super star’ that protected you against any and all attacks.
While we don’t have access to the ‘super star’, what we do have is foresight. Not in the cool Dr. X see into the future kinda way, but we can prepare for anything that may throw us off track.
If you’re dieting and you know that there’s an event coming up that may lead you to overeat or throw a wrench in your dieting plan, prepare for it in advance. Find out what food will be available and this way you’ll have an idea of what to eat when you’re there.
The number one thing that throws people off their diet is a lack of planning.
Just like in Mario Kart, if you were unfortunate enough to be hit by a Blue shell right before you finished, there wasn’t much you could do but restart the game. Let’s face it this is life. Shits gon’ happen. Instead of crying over spilled milk, just reset and move forward.
Over ate one day? No big deal. Go back to normal eating the next day and you’ll be fine. The worst thing you can do is mentally berate yourself and begin slashing calories the next day or do an excessive amount of cardio to try and balance things.
3. Laugh It Off
We can either complain or be negative about a situation, or we can just be like ‘ha, fuck it’ and move on.
While for the most part we do need to be disciplined when we’re trying to reach for a certain goal say dieting to drop fat. Trying to control everything will only mess with you more and the chances of you falling off will be doubled. Sometimes, you just gotta chill out.
Remember, the blue shells are going to be inevitable. How you react to the blue shells will determine where you end up in the pole position of your goal acquisition.
Don’t do something that will throw you off the race track completely.
